I tagged myself after reading Emma's latest "food" meme. You take the letters in your name and share a food-related factoid for each one. I'll keep things simple and just use "Katie". Here goes!
K. Krispy Kremes! They bring me back to my sourthern roots and probably brings me a few seconds/minutes/years closer to a double bypass. I do not partake of them on a frequent basis, but when I do, I enjoy a good old glazed donut (or a boston cream) with a small cup of Krispy Kreme coffee.
A. Apples. Apples were a staple in my day-to-day lunch sacks. I never even knew that apples couldn't be "in season." I just thought they grew from trees year round. I put up with my share of gross, dark red mushy, chemical-tinged pommes.... which I won't even touch these days. But I'm still a sucker for a good, crisp, organic Braeburn or Honeycrisp. Mmmm!
T. Tiropita. Greek cheese "pies" or "pastries" (but not in sweet pastry way). NOTHING beats a good tiropita. This weekend was the Holy Trinity Greek Festival. I'm sorry to say I did not go, because each year I go specifically for tiropita, and each year I get DISSED in a big way (they're always sold out). Can you really beat hot buttery, crispy filo and creamy, salty feta? Mmmmm....
I. Ice cream. I go in SPURTS with my ice cream fanatacism. After I gave birth to V., I craved it incessantly. I continued to insist on it until just recently (could be the cold fall months that keep my need for icy treats at bay?). My favorites are a good, premium vanilla ice cream with frozen raspberries on top. Of course, chocolate is never a bad idea either. For some reason, though, in my family we develop an acute fear of ice cream cartons after they've dwelt in the freezer for any time longer than a week. Once the ice cream develops ice crystals, we fail to remember it can easily be scraped away.... It's a darn shame, all that ice cream usually gets thrown away. But open my freezer and see for yourself! Free Ice cream to anyone who wants it!
E. Enchilda casserole. This was a special dish growing up in my home. I never fully appreciated it until just a few years ago (and had to cook on my own... you never appreciate any food until that happens). Growing up I was certain onions were hiding in it, and I never enjoyed eating food I didn't trust (or any food that wasn't a slice of bread of a hot dog). But this also happens to be my mom's patented potluck and hospitality dish. That reminds me: mom can you give me the recipe? :D
Go tag yourself and show me your food facts!

I bought Tiropitas yesterday at the Greek Festival and enjoyed them thoroughly.
Love apples too!
What a great idea! Hope you don't mind but I stole it and tagged myself!

Hey XK, I learned something interesting about red apples that might interest you. Like you, I HATED those red mushy tasteless apples that I had to eat because they were cheaper than the New Zealand ones I liked better. But I just learned recently that Red Delicious apples USED to be really good apples, but for reasons I can't remember right now the "good" parts were bred out of them - the crispness, the flavor, the sweetness. They just got steadily worse over years of breeding, probably by breading for yield rather than flavor. For more reasons I don't know, WA apple growers are breeding them back to true type, and even the huge Costco bags of cheap apples taste really good to me now! I was so surprised!
